Divots win Season Finales vs. Mrs. Johnson's Fifth Grade Class
by Simon Templar
There's no secret that the Fixur Divots' season didn't go exactly as planned this year. That is why it was so important for them to end the season on a high note. Many will say that the Divots, over forty-five games out of the Wild Card, won a meaningless game. However, for a team looking to rebuild and rebound next year, even the smallest of victories can serve as a launching point.
"Obviously, one win doesn't make a season, but it's an important building block for next year," says James Kirst, co-founder with Russel L. Harper of the Fixur Divots Ultimate Team. "I'm very proud of these guys. They never gave up, and that's what's really important. I look forward to next year."
The Divots had their strongest start of the season scoring first for the first time all season. The Divots were able to take the first half kickoff and march down the field, scoring on a strong six play sixty-two yard drive. Kirst caught two of those passes, including the one in the endzone, while Harper continued where he left off last week making three acrobatic catches on the drive.
The Divots were running on all cylinders at the start of the game, jumping out to a quick 6-0 lead. Doubtlessly they were capitlizing on the momentum they started to build at Houston. They would continue to pour the pressure on and wouldn't relent and soon, they were up 12-3 and looked poised to take the game.
"Yeah, you know, we were defeaeted pretty badly in Houston, but I really think we were able to build off of the momentum we had in that game," says Kirst. "I really think that if we played them to thirty, we could have made it a game."
The Divots played the Houston Gamblers last week and though they lost 15-1, a late score down 14-0 definitely provided the team confidence headed to this week's game.
Early in the game, the team used their height and strength advantage to its fullest, simply outrunning and outmuscling the smaller and weaker team. Towards the end of the second half, however, Mrs. Johnson's class seemed to be making up for their lack of strength with speed and endurance. However, they seemed to run out of gas in the second half. Their defense was noticeably sloppier, and their offense began to stall. Suddenly, their lead was cut in half when victory seemed out of reach.
But then, after a great defensive play by Kirst, the Divots were able to engineer a quick four play drive that culminated in Russel Harper's fourth score of the game, and finally the Divots were able to reclaim momentum. A late score made it 14-7, but by then, the momentum was clearly on the Divots side and they were able to win the game 15-7.
"It was a tough win, that's for sure. Mrs. Johnson's class, I'll give them a lot of credit. They're a great team and incredibly young. They'll be dangerous in the future," says Harper.
"I think we can build off of this win," says Kirst. "I wish we could be in the playoffs, but ending the season on a high note is still very important, and I couldn't be happier with this win."
Kirst led the team with six catches for scores, while Harper was close behind him with five. Tucker, Church, Tex, and Simmons all contributed with one catch for a score in the Divots win.
